You Don’t Have to Wait Until Everything Is Fixed to Have Joy

One of the easiest traps to fall into during a hard season is believing joy belongs to the future.

We tell ourselves:

I’ll breathe when this is over.

I’ll relax when the answer comes.

I’ll enjoy my life when things settle down.

I’ll feel like myself again when everything is fixed.

But what if joy was never meant to be postponed?

Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always.”

Paul wrote those words during hardship, not comfort. That matters.

Biblical joy isn’t pretending everything is fine. It’s not denial, and it’s not forcing yourself to feel happy.

Joy is the decision to recognize that hardship does not get to have the final say over your life.

You can be disappointed and still laugh.

You can be uncertain and still enjoy dinner with people you love.

You can be healing and still have a beautiful day.

You can be waiting on answers and still notice what is good right now.

Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that enjoying life during a difficult season means we aren’t taking our problems seriously enough.

But joy is not irresponsibility.

Sometimes joy is resistance.

It is refusing to hand every hour of your day over to fear.

Nehemiah 8:10 says, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Not the absence of problems.

Joy.

Maybe strength doesn’t always look like fighting harder.

Sometimes strength looks like laughing again.

Going outside.

Calling a friend.

Playing music.

Eating something you love.

Noticing the sunset.

Thanking God for one good thing in the middle of a hundred unanswered questions.

You don’t have to wait until everything is fixed to experience joy.

You are allowed to live while you are healing.

You are allowed to laugh while life is still complicated.

You are allowed to enjoy what is good while God is still working on what is broken.

That isn’t pretending the storm isn’t there.

It’s remembering the storm is not the whole story.

Reflect

Where have you been postponing joy until something changes?

What is one small thing you can enjoy today without needing to earn it first?

Prayer

God, teach me how to receive joy in the middle of unfinished things. Help me stop believing that peace and happiness can only come after every problem is solved. Open my eyes to the goodness that is still here, and help me live fully in the life You have given me today. Amen.

Remember, you're not too broken... Love Mel, xoxo
